Measure 97 Gets Boost from Bernie Sanders

Supporters of a proposed measure that would direct $3 billion per year to schools, health care, and senior citizens by imposing a 2.5 percent tax on companies that do more than $25 million in sales in Oregon got a big boost of support Wednesday.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has endorsed the efforts of the Vote Yes on 97 campaign, they announced.

"At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, it is time for large profitable corporations to start paying their fair share of taxes," he said in a statement. "That is why I am supporting Oregon 97. Large corporations must help the people of Oregon provide high quality public education, health care and services for seniors.

"Passing Measure 97 would allow Oregon to fund 7,500 new teachers, provide 16,000 seniors with quality in-home care – without raising taxes on small businesses."

A poll out earlier this week had supporters of the measure trailing opponents but within the margin of error
