Tualatin Couple Killed In Roseburg Car Crash

John and Elizabeth Staples died when their Chevy Malibu went off the highway and into the North Umpqua River, Oregon State Police said.

TUALATIN, OR — Two Tualatin residents died in a car accident near Roseburg Monday afternoon, according to the Oregon State Police.

John Boyd Staples and Elizabeth Ann Staples, both 91, were killed around 1:30 p.m. June 26 when their 2013 Chevrolet Malibu drifted off Highway 138 E., near milepost 44 in Roseburg. According to state police, John was driving at the time of accident.

Police say the Malibu — for unknown reasons — left the roadway, struck several boulders, and went down a steep embankment into the North Umpqua River, ultimately coming to rest upside down in the water.

Both John and Elizabeth were wearing their seatbelt when the accident occurred, police said, noting also that no other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
