Clackamas County Nonprofit Raises $18,000 for Senior Assistance

Bolstering its ability to assist seniors for the 45th consecutive year, the Senior Citizens Council of Clackamas County held a fundraiser March 3.

At a Gray Gables Estate dinner in Milwaukie, which was attended by about 50 people, the Oregon City-based nonprofit raised $18,000 –– average for a council fundraising event, according to Sue Jones, the council’s financial case manager.

"We take care of folks who have been abused…financially, physically, or emotionally," she said. "We live on donations."

Serving about 750 clients annually, funds raised by the council through grants and donations go toward council service programs, assist with clients’ court fees (which can be costly), and pay for staff time, "depending on the need of the moment," Jones said.

The council’s programs promote independence, improve quality of life, and prevent or end abuse, neglect (including self-neglect) and exploitation of at-risk seniors and adults with disabilities, according to the council’s website.

The event featured a buffet dinner, a performance by veteran Portland comedian Susan Rice, raffles, and the live auction of a Portland Trail Blazer basket donated by the team and Wells Fargo, according to a Wells Fargo statement.

"We've had larger turnouts for this event in the past, but we're thrilled with the generosity of the attendees and sponsors who supported us this year," said Christi Bird, executive director for the council. "The funds we raised will help us save the lives and financial resources of more senior citizens at risk in Clackamas County."

The March event, Jones said, was the council’s fundraiser for the year, with the next "fun-raiser" ice cream social tentatively planned for the fall.
