Clackamas And Marion Counties Seek Replacement For Vic Gilliam

Clackamas and Marion Counties will meet in a joint session on Wednesday, Feb. 22, to interview candidates and pick a person to fill the seat in the state house of representatives vacated by the resignation of Vic Glliam.

Gilliam, who has represented Silverton since 2007, announced his resignation on Monday. He was diagnosed with ALS - also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease - in 2015.

Since Gilliam's district covered both counties they have to make the decision on his replacement together.

The meeting will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Mt. Angel Fire District located at 300 Monroe St. in Mt. Angel. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

The session will be videotaped and archived on Clackamas County’s YouTube Channel and broadcast on the Clackamas County Government Channel and Capital Community Television in Marion County.

Gilliam informed his constituents of his diagnosis in November of that year. Last year, he faced a brief primary challenge from a candidate who dropped out. Gilliam was re-elected in November.

"I am extremely grateful and honored by the confidence you have placed in me for over a decade," he wrote on his Facebook page. "However, several changes in life show it's time to announce my resignation as your State Representative.

"After prayer, consulting family & friends, I was led to this decision for reasons including fairness to you my constituents."
