Deputies Resolve Standoff with Suicidal Man

Standoff, which went on for a couple of hours, was peacefully resolved.

If you're wondering why traffic was backed up by a small strip mall on SE Mcloughlin on Tuesday it was because deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office were working to prevent a Gladstone man from hurting himself or others.

They were successful though it took a while.

The standoff started just before 3:00 p.m.

Deputies responded to a small strip mall at 18080 SE McLoughlin Boulevard in an unincorporated part of the county.

There, the man - a 33-year-old - was armed with a knife and threatening to kill himself or someone else.

Additional officers from Gladstone Police, Transit Police, and Oregon State Police arrived to help.

Despite pleas from the officers, the man refused to drop his knife.

The Hostage Negotiations Team from the sheriff''s office as well as professionals from the Behavioral Health Unit also assisted in the effort.

They were finally able to get the man to throw down his knife and surrender.

He was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
