Election 2016: Record Number of Oregonians Registered to Vote

There's still a week to go before the registration deadline.

It's a good thing Oregonians vote by mail because based on newly released numbers, it would be very crowded at polling sites on Election Day. There are now more than 2.5 million Oregonians registered to vote.

"Oregon has grown over the last four years and we have actively worked to register new Oregonians as voters," said Secretary of State Jeanne Atkins. "Moreover, there is an unprecedented public interest in this election cycle."

As of September 30th, there were 2,501,264 registered voters in the state. The deadline to register is midnight on Tuesday, October 18th.

Atkins said many new registrations have come through the state's motor voter law, which automatically registers people to vote unless they choose not to.

"Oregon Motor Voter will add over 250,000 new voters to the rolls and voter registration drives across the state are helping people get registered to vote or update their registration," said Atkins. "It’s safe to say that the November 8th will be one of the busiest elections in Oregon’s modern history."
