Humane Society Offers Reward For Info On Drowned Chihuahua

The female short-haired chihuahua was found in the Clackamas River Dec. 18 β€” drowned while still inside a locked pet carrier.

CARVER, OR β€” The Oregon Humane Society last week announced it would reward $1,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever is responsible for drowning a chihuahua in the Clackamas River near Carver.

Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies reportedly found the chihuahua β€” locked inside in a plastic pet carrier β€” near the Carver Park boat ramp around 11 a.m. Dec. 18. Officials believe the carrier was put into the river from either the boat ramp or the Carver Bridge, which crosses the Clackamas River from South Springwater Road to the Clackamas Highway.

The un-spayed female short-haired chihuahua reportedly appeared well taken care of, aside from having been drowned. Her fur was dark brown with black markings and a black muzzle, OHS officials said in a statement. She had a collar on, but it did not have an ID tag and she was not otherwise microchipped.

Originally offering $500, OHS reportedly increased its reward after receiving donations from the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

"We've had an outpouring of concern over this case, and I want to thank ALDF and HSUS for their support,” said OHS president and CEO Sharon Harmon.

Treated as a felony under Oregon law, the chihuahua's death is reportedly being investigated by Clackamas County Dog Services, OHS, and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to call 503-285-7722, ext. 214, or submit a tip online at the Oregon Humane Society's website.

Anyone who wishes to donate to cause can do so at the OHS website's donation page.
