Iraq War Veteran Raising Money to Care for Therapy Dog that was Shot

Josh Fonzi, a veteran of the Iraq War, wants people to know about Sonny, his 15-month-old German Shepherd.

Sonny, who acts as a therapy dog for Fonzi, managed to get off the property when some workers left a fence open.

The dog ran across the street where a neighbor raises turkeys.

The neighbor, fearing for his turkeys, shot Sonny in the chest.

Fonzi says that the neighbor walked across the street and told Fonzi's wife - in front of their children - what he had done.

They found Sonny trying to crawl back home and whisked him to Dove Lewis trauma center where he faces a long road to recovery.

The sheriff's office says that Oregon law permits the use of deadly force to protect livestock from an animal attack.

Fonzi has set up a GoFundMe page to raise $95,000 to help pay for Sonny's care.

So far he has raised $6,180.
