Oregon City Municipal Elevator to be Operated by Downtown Association

Oregon City signed a three-year-deal with the Downton Oregon City Association to provide staffing.

The Downtown Oregon City Association is taking over management and staffing of the city's municipal elevator. The elevator, which travels between the city's two levels, is considered the only "vertical street" in North America.

The association will provide staffing and information about local businesses, attractions and history of the city. They elevator had been staffed for the past 25 years by a company that chose not to renew its contract. DOCA's contract is for three years.

"The Municipal Elevator is one of Oregon City’s most important icons. DOCA is excited to continue the tradition of providing Elevator Guides," said DOCA Executive Director Jonathan Stone. "We look forward to working with the City of Oregon City on enhancing the visitor experience. The Elevator Guides are one of the best resources for tourists learn more about Oregon City.

"We want the Municipal Elevator to continue to be a cultural resource and to build on the traditions that the community loves. "

The association, which takes over on February 1, 201y, says they want to enhance connectivity between the McLoughlin Neighborhood and Downtown.

"Over the next few months, we will begin a robust community conversation about ways that we can improve the public’s experience at the elevator," Stone says.

The elevator marked its 100th anniversary last year. It opened in 1915 and was rebuilt in 1955. It is a National Register historic landmark and served about 250,000 trips in the past year.

The elevator, which is free, is open seven days a week.
