Algae Bloom Leads to Health Advisory for Ross Island Lagoon

testing for toxins is underway.

The presence of an algae bloom has led the Oregon Health Authority to issue a health advisory for the Ross Island Lagoon and its mouth where it connects to the Holgate Channel.

The advisory was issued after visual confirmation of a blue-green bloom in the water.

A full analysis of the algae and whatever toxins may be present isn't expected until the middle of next week. Those results will determine if the advisory can be lifted.

The advisory was issued because some toxins produced by the bloom can be harmful to people and pets.

Health officials say "When in doubt, stay out."
