📰 News we're reading

1. Mayor Wilson proclaims Welcoming Week 2026 (portland.gov) — Portland Mayor Keith Wilson has proclaimed September 10, 2026 as Welcoming Week, celebrating immigrants and refugees as central to the city's culture and economy. The declaration emphasizes that everyone in Portland, regardless of origin or identity, should feel they belong and can fully participate in community life, reinforcing the city's membership in the national Welcoming America network.

2. Why is Portland's I-5 Closure happening now? And why all at once? (oregonlive.com) — Portland drivers face a five-week, around-the-clock closure of southbound I-5 starting Friday, as ODOT rebuilds a two-mile stretch under tightly constrained weather and cost conditions. Officials say doing the work all at once, rather than nights or weekends or by lane, will shorten the overall disruption, save up to $9 million, and improve worker safety, though delays could still extend the timeline.

3. Portland City Council commits support — but no money — to 2 downtown venues (opb.org) — Portland's expanded City Council has voted 8-4 to keep studying both a new Broadway-capable theater at Portland State University and potential renovations to downtown's Keller Auditorium, but without committing any funding yet. The move keeps alive an expensive two-venue concept despite an analysis saying demand likely supports only one, leaving big questions about cost, timing, and the future of major touring shows in the city.

4. Here's how Portland is preparing for potential earthquakes (koin.com) — Portland is reorganizing its earthquake communication network, moving BEECN sites under the larger Neighborhood Emergency Team program to boost volunteers and improve readiness. Residents are urged to learn their nearest BEECN location, which will serve as a key neighborhood gathering and communication point after a major Cascadia quake, and consider volunteering with NET to strengthen local resilience.

5. Burlesque aims to revitalize Portland's Ankeny Alley (koin.com) — Downtown Portland's Ankeny Alley is getting a boost from new burlesque shows, including the Dolly Parton-inspired "Dolly!" at the recently opened Can Can Portland, running through September 20. Local performer and saloon owner Madam Cooper explains how her venues are drawing crowds back downtown and keeping Portland's affection for Dolly Parton alive in the Rose City.
