1. The Portland Metro Chamber Sues The City Over Recent Arts Tax Increase (kxl.com) — Portland's Metro Chamber has sued the city in Oregon Tax Court, arguing council illegally raised the Arts Tax from $35 to $50 and tied it to inflation without voter approval. If the challenge succeeds, Portlanders would keep paying the original $35 tax, while low-income residents under $20,000 would still be exempt under the recent threshold change.
2. Boulder that crashed down onto Portland QFC removed Thursday (kgw.com) — A boulder that crashed onto the roof of the QFC at West Hills Plaza in Southwest Portland forced the store to close while crews used a crane to remove it and assess damage. No one was hurt, and officials say no additional boulders appear likely to fall, but reopening may still take another day or two.
3. Dress for Success Oregon opens new WorkWell Center in Northeast Portland (koin.com) — A new WorkWell Center from Dress for Success Oregon is opening in Northeast Portland, offering free career coaching, job search support, and on-site child watch for women seeking work. Located at 1532 NE 37th Ave, the weekday-only center consolidates coaching, workspace, and even a salon, aiming to remove practical barriers like childcare, transportation, and professional clothing for Portland-area jobseekers.
4. Cultural Performance – Koto and Shakuhachi by Také to Ito (竹と糸) (allclassical.org) — Portland residents can catch a free koto and shakuhachi performance at the Portland Japanese Garden's Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner, featuring the duo Také to Ito. The longtime collaborators blend traditional Japanese pieces with jazz and classical influences, bringing their acclaimed international tour to the West Coast this fall.
5. Trail Blazers fire Braiden Bell in less than a day over resurfaced social media posts (awfulannouncing.com) — Portland basketball fans just saw the Trail Blazers reverse course on their new TV play-by-play hire, dropping broadcaster Braiden Bell hours after announcing him when old social media posts with racist and sexist language resurfaced. The team apologized to Rip City, reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance, and now must restart the search to replace longtime announcer Kevin Calabro.
