Body of Portland Man Recovered in Denali National Park

Michael Purdy had not shown up for his first day of a summer job.

The body of 24-year-old Michael Purdy was recovered Sunday along a trail in Denali National Park.

The National Park Service had said Purdy had gone on a hiking trip but never returned.

Purdy, from Portland, was supposed to start a summer job with Denali ATV Tours in Healy, Alaska but didn't show up for his first day.

It was going to be Purdy's second year with the tour company.

Early indications are that Purdy, an experience hiker, had left the trail to do some scrambling on higher terrain and fell and died of a head injury.

His car was found nearby with overnight backpacking gear and food.

"Friends, family and co-workers describe Mike Purdy as an adventurous and experienced backcountry hiker familiar with the park," the park service said in a statement.
