Happy Hump Day, fellow Rose City Residents! Lots going on today, so let's get right into it.

First, today's weather: The sun is going to shine as if Ra himself were daring it to get hotter and the heatening has just begun. The high temp will be 100, if we're lucky.

  1. Small dollar donors in Portland find increased influence over campaigns thanks to the Open and Accountable Elections (OAE) program. A report released Friday shows that smaller contributions now dominate campaign fundraising, contributors were more evenly spread across the city and that the OAE experienced a high participation rate. (OPB News)
  2. In a move that should surprise no one, Multnomah County is once again mandating masks indoors. People 5 and older — vaccinated and unvaccinated — in Multnomah County will be required to wear masks in indoor public spaces including stores, restaurants and gyms. The mandate goes into effect on Friday. Those in violation could face fines of up to $1,000. (KPTV)
  3. During the violent clashes that took place between far-right groups and far-left protesters in downtown over the weekend, law enforcement did little to intervene, even though many of the people involved appeared to be openly carrying guns. Police claim that they were busy at the time, dealing with a robbery in Old Town-Chinatown and a fatal shooting in SE Portland. (KGW.com)
  4. The value of homes in certain areas of SE Portland are among the lowest in the city. This is, in part, due to the practice of "yellowlining" in these neighborhoods, making it difficult to receive loan money and resulting in a lack of public investment and infrastructure. The city is looking to remedy that and it has a plan. The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability and the Portland Bureau of Transportation has released the Existing Conditions report for the Lower Southeast Rising Area Plan which outlines the efforts. (BikePortland.org)
  5. I've written about the city's big plans to renovate 82nd Ave., but that's not the only Portland street getting a makeover. Naito Parkway in downtown Portland is getting a $16 million transformation. “South of the Hawthorne (Bridge) we’re rebuilding the whole street, curb to curb,” said Dylan Rivera with the Portland Bureau of Transportation. • SAGE Metro Portland is a program of Friendly House, a non-profit neighborhood center & social service agency in Portland, OR. It offers social events, peer support groups, and resources for LGBT seniors. It is having a fundraiser tonight at Oakshire Beer Hall in NE Portland. • Who knew breweries were so philanthropic? 10 Barrel Brewing Co. is teaming up with the Portland Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation for a Green Streets Clean Up event. Volunteers should meet outside the brewery at 6:00 PM.
  • It's Comedy in the Pearl tonight at the Botanist. This outdoor show under the rooftop tent will feature 6 different comedians. That's a lot of bang for your buck! Get your tickets online. 7:00 - 9:00 PM.
  • The Hollywood Theater will be showing a 35mm print of John Waters' 1977 trashy classic Desperate Living. If that sounds wild, that isn't even the half of it. 7:30 PM.
  • Come to SE Portland bar Goodfoot to hear saxophonist Dave McMurray's Grateful Deadication. Dave McMurray has taken a long, strange trip to arrive at his sophomore release for Blue Note Records. On Grateful Deadication, the saxophonist takes his gritty, soulful Detroit sound and reimagines the flower empowered songs of San Francisco icons the Grateful Dead with an album as vibrant as it is unexpected. Tickets are available online. Doors at 8:00 PM.

  • Portland Art Museum: "Tickets are now available! ⠀ ⠀ For the second year in a row, we are the exclusive U.S. host for “Venice VR Expanded,”..." (Instagram)
  • It's going to be Portland Burger Week soon, so you best prepare yourselves. Presented by New Seasons, it will feature 37 delectable, original burgers from a variety of locations around town. • You'd have to be living under a rock not to know about the next heatwave coming our way. So, while I didn't put this in the news section, there are some important things to keep in mind. While not as bad as our last heatwave, Gov. Kate Brown has declared a State of Emergency. Any Portlander with air conditioning is probably thanking their lucky stars, but that's only good if the power doesn't go out. Portland Gas & Electric wants you to be prepared, just in case. And if the heat weren't bad enough, we may have some smoke from wildfires thrown into the mix. Be safe out there!
  • If you have school-age children, then you know that they're heading back to the classroom, but what will that look like in the time of COVID? Portland Public Schools has released its Back to School 2021 plan to inform parents of the safety measures it'll be taking this school year. (Portland Public Schools)
  • We may be worried about the heat, but I'll tell you who's not. Big Foot! He was sighted up on Mt. Tabor, practicing his hoops and wearing the colors of the most awesomist team in the NBA.
