Car Theft, Bank Robbery, And Police Chase (All In One Day) Ends In Arrest, Police Say

Jesse Brockner allegedly stole a car in Yamhill, robbed a bank in Aloha, and crashed his getaway car in Northeast Portland — on Wednesday.

PORTLAND, OR — A man accused of stealing a car in Yamhill County and robbing a bank in Washington County was shot by Portland police and taken into custody after reportedly crashing his stolen vehicle into a parked car in Multnomah County — all on Wednesday.

Jesse Lee Brockner, 31, was lodged at the Multnomah County Jail on Wednesday. Charges are pending.

The tri-county crime spree reportedly began north of Yamhill in the 22000-block of Northwest Russell Creek Road around 7 a.m. Aug. 30, when Yamhill County Sheriff's deputies responded to a reported vehicle theft. Police say Brockner stole a turquoise 1987 Chevrolet Blazer, which he then drove to Beaverton.

Just before 9:30 a.m., Washington County Sheriff's deputies were called to the U.S. Bank at 18485 S.W. Farmington Rd. in Aloha — just more than 20 miles away — after Brockner allegedly entered the building armed with a handgun, demanded money, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Brockner reportedly escaped in the turquoise Chevy Blazer.

Around 12:45 p.m., Portland police reportedly saw the Blazer near Southeast Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard and Southeast Clinton Street. As officers moved to stop the vehicle, Brockner took off through the nearby neighborhood streets, police said, turning onto Northeast 55th Avenue from East Burnside Street and crashing into a parked car.

Police immediately converged on Brockner and reportedly issued commands to which Brockner did not respond. For reasons unclear — beyond his decision to simply not comply with orders — Portland Officer David Staab shot Brockner and took him into custody with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Staab is reportedly a 24-year police veteran. He has been placed on paid administrative leave while the bureau's Internal Affairs Division conducts an investigation.

Brockner was taken to a Portland area hospital and treated for the gunshot wound before being taken to jail. Brockner reportedly has a pending case in Multnomah County for theft, identity theft, and forgery from an arrest in April.

This investigation will continue, and this post will be updated when more information is available.
