Chemical Spill At Peterkort Towne Center Requires HazMat Cleanup

The spill occurred at 4 p.m. Tuesday and resulted in the loss of nearly 200 gallons of Ultramine AL-300, a chemical that stops corrosion

PORTLAND, OR — A chemical spill at Peterkort Towne Square Tuesday required folks shopping in the area to shelter in place while the Oregon Regional HazMat Team and the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Hazardous Materials Team investigated, according to TVF&R officials.

The spill occurred shortly after 4 p.m. July 18, when a 500-gallon barrel of Ultramine AL-300 fell several feet off the back of delivery truck lift gate, officials said. Ultramine AL-300 is a chemical for closed loop aluminum systems that prevents corrosion and calcium carbonate scale. The barrel was being delivered to a shipping and mailbox services business, officials said.

The spill released roughly 200 gallons of the 50o-gallon barrel into a storm drain behind the Towne Center's businesses, officials said. An evacuation zone of 175 feet was created while crews confirmed there was no immediate danger to the public.

According to officials, the spill was confined to the Peterkort Towne Center sewer system and did not leave the property. A private contractor is expected to flush the entire system to further ensure the area is clear of the chemical, officials said.

No injuries were reported, and Peterkort Towne Center has been reopened for business.
