🌱 Commissioners Consider Public Safety With Surplus + New Ferry

Here are the top stories in Portland today:

1. With higher tax revenue for the City of Portland this year, City Commissioners say there will be more options to address public safety. Commissioner Mingus Mapps wants to expand existing initiatives such as the Street Response program and add resources to the police behavioral health unit. The budget is set to be finalized by the end of October. (KATU 2)
2. Portland's new passenger ferry from North Portland to downtown has begun test runs in anticipation of a Spring 2023 completion date. The Frog Ferry has been working with city and state officials for the last four years to bring an all-passenger ferry service to the Willamette River. The service boasts a 25-minute boat trip from Cathedral Park in St. John's to downtown Portland's South Waterfront. (KGW8)
3. Portland city leaders met with directors of cultural institutions in Old Town, including Lan Su Chinese Garden, The Japanese American Museum of Oregon, the Oregon Jewish Museum and the Center for Holocaust Education, and the Portland Chinatown Museum, to work toward solutions to their complaints about rising crime in the area. 4. Portland Police have identified the pedestrian who was killed in a Southeast Powell Boulevard crash on Oct. 1 as 34-year-old Ryan J. Dickenson. (Oregon Live)
5. The Portland Bureau of Transportation took down and replaced "Merge Simpson," a merge sign depicting the famous TV character Marge that was posted at a northbound I-405 onramp, citing safety concerns. (KATU 2)
