Crane Erection To Impact Traffic Downtown From June 23 To June 25

Street closures will occur beginning at 7 p.m. Friday near the Hawthorne Bridge while crews erect a construction crane over the weekend.

PORTLAND, OR — Officials with Multnomah County on Wednesday announced the upcoming road closures in downtown Portland beginning Friday.

The closures, which will carry through the weekend, officials said, will allow crews to erect a construction crane for work on the new $300 million Central Courthouse slated to open in 2020.

From 7 p.m. June 23 to the evening of June 25, the following closures will occur:

  • Southwest Madison Street will be closed from Southwest Second Avenue to east of Southwest Naito Parkway;
    • Eastbound access to the Hawthorne Bridge from northbound Southwest Naito Parkway will still be allowed for cars, bikes, and pedestrians;
    • Commuters from downtown who want to cross the bridge are encouraged to use Southwest Columbia Street eastbound to turn left onto the parkway. This will also be the eastbound detour route for the TriMet buses that use the Hawthorne Bridge, officials said.
  • Southwest First Avenue will be closed from Southwest Main Street to Southwest Jefferson Street.

Commuters attempting to access the Hawthorne Bridge from its Eastside will not be affected, officials said.
