Dozens of Citations in Portland Crosswalk Enforcement
Operation by Portland Police and Portland Bureau of Transportation results in 33 citations and one warning in two hours.

A pedestrian safety operation Wednesday in Northeast Portland resulted in dozens of citations and violations.
In a two hour period, investigators at NE 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard issued 33 citations with 43 violations.

The operation was part of an ongoing effort by the city to raise awareness of pedestrian safety and Oregon traffic laws.
Officials picked the intersection because of Sandy Boulevard's inclusion on the city's list of Portland's 10 designated high crash corridor.

In addition to bus stops, restaurants, and other businesses, it is also near The Grotto, a popular destination visited by 300,000 people each year.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation also announced that they will install a new rapid flashing beacon at the crosswalk using money from a federal grant.
Construction on it should begin next year.
According to PBOT, the following citations were issued:
Failure to stop and remain stopped for pedestrian: 28 violations, 1 warning
Driving uninsured: 4 violations
Driving while suspended: 3 violations
Operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile communication device: 2 violations
Passing stopped vehicle at crosswalk: 1 violation
Failure to obey a traffic control device: 1 violation
No operators license: 1 violation
Failure to yield to emergency vehicle: 1 violation
Failure to renew registration: 1 violation
Illegal U-turn: 1 violation
