Driver Will Serve Six Years After Pleading Guilty to Killing Bicyclist

Kenneth Smith admitted to having smoked pot before getting behind the wheel.

A man who drove after smoking marijuana and killed a bicyclist will serve six years behind bars after pleading guilty Wednesday to manslaughter.

Kenneth Smith, 27, killed Martin Greenough in December when he struck the bicyclist with his Ford Crown Victoria along Northeast Lombard Street.

Smith drove away but was arrested less than ten minutes later.

At the time, officers said Smith smelled of marijuana and when they asked him, he admitted to having smoked earlier in the day.

Smith's guilty to plea - to charges of manslaughter, driving under the influence, and hit and run - means he will serve six years without any chance of time off for good behavior.

Greenough's family is suing Smith as well as the City of Portland and state of Oregon. The suit charges the city - by creating a poorly designed stretch of road -put cyclists at risk.
