🌱Dumpster Fire During Demonstration + Biden Coming To Portland
Find out what's going on around town with your daily Portland Patch!

Here we are back at another Tuesday in Portland. Tuesday gets a bad rap sometimes. It doesn't get a nickname, like Humpday, nor does anyone ever thank God it's Tuesday. But I think it's time we show Tuesday some respect. Here's what's going on this Tuesday.
First, today's weather:
Rain all day and a high temp of 50. That's just how it goes during a Portland springtime.

Here are the top five stories today in Portland:
- A group of demonstrators broke windows, vandalized buildings and set a dumpster ablaze at a police precinct in Northeast Portland on Saturday night, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said. Police said the group gathered in Peninsula Park at 700 North Rosa Parks Way around 8 p.m. According to a flyer posted to social media, the gathering was for a planned march to demand justice for Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Black man who was shot and killed by a police officer during a scuffle in Grand Rapids, Mich., on April 4. - Anyone hoping to drive to visit the popular 18-mile “Waterfall Corridor” in the Columbia River Gorge this summer will need to reserve a timed-access ticket in advance. Officials from Multnomah County, the Oregon Department of Transportation, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department released more information about the pilot ticket program they’re launching this year. A new Timed Use Permit system will go into effect May 24 for any personal vehicles hoping to travel the Waterfall Corridor in the Columbia River Gorge. (KOIN)
- Rents across the Portland metro area have climbed rapidly over the past year, straining the budgets of renters and forcing them to make a difficult decision: stay and try to keep up with the skyrocketing costs, or take a chance on a new place that might only prove a temporary reprieve. In Multnomah County, according to data from the online rental marketplace Apartment List, rents dropped during the pandemic but have already grown beyond pre-pandemic levels. The average approached $1,370 in March. (The Oregonian)
- One teenage boy died and three others are in the hospital after a shooting on Sunday night in southeast Portland's Centennial neighborhood, police officials said. The shooting was reported at about 8:40 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Southeast 162nd Avenue and Stark Street, which is near the border between Gresham and Portland. An officer told reporters the shooting was “likely a drive-by shooting.” PPB later confirmed the victims were juvenile males. (KATU)
- If you experience some extra traffic in town on Thursday, it will likely be because streets and areas have been shut down to make it easier for President Joe Biden to move around. The president is headed to the Pacific Northwest with stops in Portland followed by Seattle the next day. While officials have not provided details on what exactly the president will be addressing, they've said that the visit to Portland will focus on infrastructure and the trip to Seattle will be focused on the economy. - Spring is a time when many baby animals arrive and on Wednesday, the Oregon Zoo welcomed its newest member. The zoo’s 20-year-old Bornean orangutan Kitra gave birth to a new baby. The zoo says this birth is adding to the world population of the critically endangered species. Caregivers say the baby orangutan was born on April 13 at around 11 a.m. This is Kitra’s first baby and both she and the newborn are doing well in their behind-the-scenes maternity den. (KOIN)
- If you think that Portland is too rainy, just consider the Great Flood of 1862. It was the largest flood in the recorded history of Oregon, Nevada, and California, occurring from December 1861 to January 1862. It was preceded by weeks of continuous rains and snows in the very high elevations that began in Oregon in November 1861 and continued into January 1862. This was followed by a record amount of rain from January 9–12, and contributed to a flood that extended from the Columbia River southward in western Oregon, and through California to San Diego, and extended as far inland as Idaho in the Washington Territory, Nevada and Utah in the Utah Territory, and Arizona in the western New Mexico Territory.
