Enough is Enough: Judge Orders Man Held After Fifth Arrest in Four Days

The 35-year-old had been "freaking people out" by the VA Hospital.

As a man was being arrested for the fifth time in four days, he told one of thee arresting officers "You're a demon." More than once.

That man, 35-year-old Agustin Cruz, will have a couple of days to think about that as a federal judge has ordered that he be kept in jail.

It was Monday morning and the Veteran Affairs Police Department had been called to the human resources building at the VA in Portland that someone was "freaking people out."

When they got there, the person had moved to the parking garage and was breaking windows. That person was Cruz.

One of the officers said Cruz was sitting on top of an overturned garbage can blocking the glass sliding door between the garage and the elevator so that no one could get past. There was a sleeping bag next to the garbage can.

The officer told Cruz to get up.

"No," Cruz allegedly replied. "You are demons."

The officer repeated what he had said.

"No!" Cruz allegedly said. "You're a demon."

Several officers were able to pin Cruz to the wall. At which point, they discovered he had a baseball-sized piece of rock in one hand that he was trying to throw at the officers.

"Get away from me demons," Cruz said, according to court papers. "I don't want to die."

One they had him in custody, they discovered he had a piece of railroad spke or rebar in his pocket. They asked him if he was a veteran.

"Yes," Cruz told them. "With the United Nations."

As he was placed in a police car, he asked to be released.

"Don't put me in the car," he said. "I don't want to die."

As it turns out, it was his fifth arrest in four days.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on September 8th.
