Former Oregon Governor Gives Coat to Homeless Man at Shelter
Kulongoski gives his own coat and gloves to veteran staying at temporary warming shelter.
PORTLAND, OR — A military veteran staying at a Portland homeless shelter is a bit warmer today after former Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski gave him his coat and gloves. The man was at VFW Post 134 on Northeast Alberta Street and staying in its emergency shelter due to the extremely cold weather. The former governor insisted that Lee Williams, 49, take his hooded, ski-parka style coat.
In a phone interview, Williams said he didn't know who Kulongoski was or why the man was trying to give him a coat, and he initially tried to refuse. He said Kulongoski insisted he take it, along with a pair of gloves. Williams said the new coat is a lot warmer than his old one.
