Gas Leak Prompts Evacuation Downtown

Gas leak in the basement of a building on Southwest Alder forced the evacuation of several buildings before the all clear was given.

An entire block was been evacuated downtown because of a gas leak. After about two and one half hours the all-clear was given.

The leak was in the basement of 813 SW Alder. Firefighters arrived around 7:00 Thursday morning and evacuated the building and then themselves while they waited for the power to be shut off.

Streets were closed in the area and people were urged to avoid the area.

It's not clear what caused the leak though there is construction going on at the building. Officials are being extra cautious, mindful of the explosion last month that leveled several buildings.
