The Timbers were playing without suspended Colombian forward Dairon Asprilla and Argentine playmaker Sebastian Blanco, who was on the bench, but didn't see the field because of a hamstring injury.
"It was a very strong performance. The guys were motivated," Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese told the Associated Press after the game. "They understood the moment that was at stake and they performed very well today."

NYCFC, the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, advanced to the final with a 2-1 win over No. 2 seed Philadelphia Union on Sunday in Chester, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia was missing 11 players due to MLS health and safety protocols.
Brazilian forward Talles Magno scored the 88th-minute game-winner for NYCFC. Philadelphia had opened the scoring on an own goal in the 63rd minute, but NYCFC's Argentine midfielder Maxi Moralez equalized 2 minutes later.
NYCFC will be playing in its first MLS Cup final. The team began play in 2015.
Portland won the 2015 title game, defeating Columbus Crew. The Timbers then lost the 2018 final to Atlanta United.
The Timbers' Asprilla is eligible for this year's final after serving his one-match suspension for the red card he picked up against Colorado in the Western Conference semifinal. Portland will provide an update on Blanco's condition later in the week.
Meanwhile, NYCFC's Argentine forward Valentin Castellanos is eligible to play after serving a one-match ban for receiving two yellow cards in NYCFC's upset of No. 1 seed New England in the Eastern Conference semifinal.
