Intersection Where Teen Was Killed to Get Crosswalk

PBOT will put a median on Hawthrone and 43rd.

The intersection in Southeast Portland where a teenage girl was run down by a speeding driver and killed will now get a crosswalk and a median island.

The decision - first reported by BikePortland.com - will bring big changes to 43rd and Hawthorne where 15-year-old Fallon Smart was killed a week before the start of school.

After Smart was killed - the man charged with her death has pleaded not guilt - a makeshift memorial with signs saying "20 is Plenty" went up at the spot, effectively closing off a lane of traffic.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation originally was going to clear the memorial and reopen the lane but changed its mind after hearing from the community, which pointed out that currently there are no marked crosswalks between 41st and 48th Avenues.
