Hello, you strange and beautiful creatures and welcome to another fine Wednesday in the delightful kingdom of Portland. There's a lot going on, so I'm going to get right into it.

First, today's weather: Not a cloud in the sky today, as the weather warms up to a balmy 76.

  1. The sweep of a homeless camp in Laurelhurst Park last month cleared it, but residents in the neighborhood are now wary of the campers returning and it's already causing friction. Some of these fears are justified, as a few tents have reappeared in the neighborhood, but a few residents' reaction has the homeless calling 911. (Willamette Week)
  2. There is increasing debate around what should be taught in public schools and Oregon certainly isn't immune to this. Particularly with the subjects of history and social sciences, there are strong opinions in how they should be presented, in the light of racial bias. House Bills 2845 and 2023 have created new 2021 social science standards, but are they enough of an improvement? (OPB)
  3. We've always known that we have great beer here in Oregon, but it's always nice to get a little recognition. The North American Brewers Association Beer Fest was last Saturday and Oregon beermakers won 25 gold medals, with Breakside Brewery alone claiming 8 of those. Prost! (KOIN)
  4. Oregon National Guard members are arriving at Portland area hospitals to help with the surge of patients they've been seeing. Providence hospitals will see a deployment of guard members this week, who will assist in non-clinical jobs, such as cleaning rooms and transporting patients. (KPTV)
  5. The vaccination mandates are coming fast and furious, with the City of Portland the latest to impose such a mandate. All city employees, roughly 6,800 of them, must be fully vaccinated, or acquire a medical or religious exemption, by Oct. 18th. (OregonLive)
