- Gun violence continues to escalate in Portland. With 2 more homicides occurring over the weekend, the city is already only five short of last year’s 57 total homicides. Mayor Ted Wheeler authorized Police Chief Chuck Lovell to deploy a focused intervention team without the community oversight panel, but few police officers are showing interest in the team. (OPB)
- There was a clash between the far-right group the Proud Boys and black-clad Antifa protesters in downtown Portland, following a religious rally at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The gathering was organized by Canadian clergyman Pastor Artur Pawlowski, with members of the Proud Boys serving as event security. Flash grenades, fireworks and mace were all used in the clash. (Latin Times)
- If the I-5 expansion in the Rose Quarter goes through, the city could see the addition of up to 8 acres of developable land above the submerged freeway. It could also bring tolls to that part of the freeway, providing critical funding for infrastructure improvements. (Willamette Week)
- Brace yourself Portland, the weather is about to get HOT. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for parts of Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon this coming week as temperatures are expected to once again spike into the triple digits. (KATU)
- The Portland Fruit Tree Project has been harvesting donated fruit to vulnerable communities for the past 15 years and the nonprofit is looking for donations and volunteers to help. So far this year, Executive Director Heather Keisler Fornes said they've collected about 1,500 pounds of fruit and they expect to exceed that number. (KGW)
