Multnomah Courthouse Construction Closes Sidewalk Until Spring

Multnomah County says that starting Monday, work on the new courthouse will start affecting pedestrian traffic, closing part of SW 1st.

PORTLAND, OR – Construction of the new Multnomah County Central Courthouse is making things a little tricker for pedestrians downtown. Work is forcing the closing of Southwest First Avenue between Madison and Jefferson.

The closure will last until Spring 2019.

The county says that the the Jefferson Station building is being remodeled as part of the construction. The building opened in 1909 as an electrical substation for the Portland Railway Light & Power Company to provide power downtown.

It will be transformed into a series of hearing rooms for cases such as traffic, small claims, and landlord/tenant disputes.

The sidewalk will reopen when the outside work on Jefferson Station is finished.
