Ah, Friday! You know how I love Fridays, Portland. The end of the week and the time to congratulate oneself for another work week done. But the week isn't quite done yet, I still need to tell you about today.
First, today's weather:
It's another day of rain, with a high of 45, and a wind that's going to make that feel colder.

Here are the top stories today in Portland:
- In Portland's most recent example of gun violence, a man opened fire on a crowd in the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood Wednesday evening. TriMet maintenance worker Reece Nitschke said the shooter was standing near the corner of Fourth Avenue and Glisan Street when he unloaded six or seven shots into a group of four or five people standing in a parking lot. The shooting left one man hurt and he was taken from the scene by ambulance. (OregonLive)
- The city of Portland is offering help to cannabis dispensaries in the form of grants. Portland’s Office of Community & Civic Life on Wednesday announced that the City Council had voted Dec. 1 to approve a $1.3 million fund that will provide grants to dispensaries impacted by a record-setting number of burglaries and robberies in the past two years, as well as the pandemic and wildfires. - There's been a lot in the news about tech companies, such as Facebook (now Meta), stealing and selling our data online, but they're not the only ones. Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat, on Wednesday urged the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to prevent credit agencies from selling Americans' private, personal data unrelated to their credit or finances via data brokers. - With vaccinations increasing, we're beginning to see a decline in COVID-19 cases, but area hospitals are still stretched to the breaking point. One cause for this is a shortage of nurses to staff these hospitals. Nationally, hospitals have been experiencing a nursing shortage for years. The vacancy rate has continued to climb from 8.2% in 2017 to 9.9% in 2020. Kevin Mealy, a spokesperson for the Oregon Nurses Association, said this has been an issue it's been trying to mitigate for years, but the pandemic has ramped up the immediate need. (KGW)
- It's been weeks since Sen. Betsy Johnson announced her plans to run for governor in 2022. Now, she's gotten an endorsement from a big name in Oregon politics. Knute Buehler, the Republican nominee for Oregon governor in 2018, announced Wednesday morning he’s endorsing Sen. Betsy Johnson, who’s running as an Independent. Johnson is “plain-spoken, independent spirit and proven record of putting the concerns of everyday Oregonians before partisan politics is exactly what Oregon needs right now,” Buehler said in a Twitter post.
