Oregon Air National Guard Celebrates 75th Anniversary

For Oregon Air National Guard, Flag Day marks two anniversaries-75 years of service and 50 years since first flag donated by PDX was raised.

June 14th - Flag Day - is going to be a big day for the Oregon Air National Guard.

The 142nd Fighter Wind, based at Portland Air National Guard Base will be marking two big anniversaries with a special flag ceremony.

It is the 75th anniversary of the Oregon Air National Guard's service to the state and nation and the 50th anniversary of them raising the first flag that was donated the unit by the people of Portland.

"It is also a celebration of the Oregon Air National Guard's 75 years of service to Oregon and our nation," said Colonel Paul Fitzgerald, the 142nd Fighter Wing Commander. "The National Guard is always ready, always there.

"Our military history in Oregon is a testament to this commitment."

Oregon's first military deployment took place in 1848.

The Air National Guard was formed in 1941 as the Army Air Corps.

The 142nd Fighter Wing has more than 1,000 airmen and patrols the skies from northern California to the Canadian border.
