Oregon Pot Sales Top $100 Million Since January

Marijuana business is smoking.

The marijuana business is growing the state's revenue higher. That's the word from the Oregon Department of Revenue, which released new numbers saying that through July 31 the state had collected $25.5 million in marijuana tax revenue.

As the tax rate is 25 percent, that translates to $102 million in sales since the beginning of the year.

After having sold $59.6 million in the first five months of the year, state-licensed dispensaries sold $42. 4 million in June and July.

The numbers are significantly above initial projections.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission initially estimated the state would bring in only $18.4 million in the program's first two years.

As for where the tax money goes, that was defined by legislation last year"

Forty percent goes to the Common School Fund;

Twenty Percent goes to Mental Health, Alcoholism, and Drug Services Account;

Fifteen percent to the state police;

Ten percent to cities for local law enforcement;

Ten percent to counties for local law enforcement; and

Five percent for the Oregon Health Authority, for alcohol and drug abuse prevention, early intervention, and treatment services.
