Orlando Shooting: New Book Takes Aim at 'Powerful Hypocrites'

The book, produced by Portlanders, seeks to raise money for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

A new book produced by Portland employees of noted advertising firm Wieden + Kennedy takes aim at what it calls "powerful hypocrites" and is raising money for the Brady Center to prevent Gun Violence.

The book, "#ThoughtsAndPrayers: Comforting Tweets from Powerful Hypocrites," is described by its authors as a "collection of condolences from pro-gun politicians who have the power to do something about gun violence, but choose hollow words instead."

The book, a response to the response to the massacre in Orlando, is a collection of tweets such as one from Sen. Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican, who tweeted: "My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Orlando."

On a website promoting the book, its creators make it clear, they are not condemning prayer.

"We condemn prayer that masquerades as action," the book's creators write. "It's time for the men and women of Congress to stop tweeting about gun violence, and start doing something about it."

The people behind the book are all Wieden+Kennedy employees who worked on the project on their own time.

The company, which says it prides itself on trying to create an environment where people can do the best work possible — including personal projects — covered upfront costs and gave the employees time to work on the book.

The people behind the book declined to identify themselves individually and speak with Patch, choosing to let what they put on the book's website be their statement.

The website says that everyone who donates $25 or more will get a free copy of the book with proceeds going to the Brady Center.

They currently plan to print 1,000 copies but will adjust depending on demand.
