Happy Thursday, everyone! It's a very special day today. National Toilet Paper Day! After the toilet paper rush of 2020, this isn't just a celebration of two-ply, it's a celebration of survival. Keep that in mind as you go through your day. Speaking of the day, let me tell you about what's going on.

First, today's weather: Another beautiful day with a sky full of clouds and a high of 76.

  1. The latest U.S. Census results shows that Oregon's population has grown. In fact it's grown to the point where it looks like the state will get a sixth seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. A number of Democrats have already signaled their interest in filling that seat, but, depending on how congressional boundaries are drawn, it will most likely go to a Republican. (Willamette Week)
  2. Gov. Kate Brown has announced an outdoor mask mandate, regardless of vaccination status. Going into effect this Friday, Aug. 27th, the outdoor mask mandate applies to large outdoor events where physical distancing is not possible. The rule does not apply to children under 5; people who are actively eating, drinking and sleeping; people experiencing homelessness; people who are playing competitive sports, and people performing outdoors. (KPTV)
  3. Oregon lawmakers are ignoring vetoes from Gov. Kate Brown. Last year, these lawmakers were shocked when Brown applied line-item vetoes to House Bills 5723 and 4304, blocking more than $17 million in proposed cuts to a variety of state agencies: the Department of Forestry, Military Department, Oregon State Police and Department of Environmental Quality. In a move that has surprised observers, the Legislature has behaved essentially as if Brown didn’t issue vetoes at all. (OPB)
  4. The uptick in violence that has happened in Portland puts the city on track to record its most violent year, potentially surpassing the 1987 record of 70 homicides. To make matters worse, the majority of this year's homicides remain unsolved. According to Portland police, they've made 15 arrests in connection with 49 homicide cases that occurred through the end of June 2021. (KGW)
  5. More details have been released in the deadly shooting inside a bar in Portland’s Old Town and authorities say the suspect is the bar owner’s son. JaMarie Herring Sr. was shot and killed early Sunday morning inside Mingle Lounge, police said. On Monday evening, 22-year-old Rolando L. Mingledoff Jr. turned himself into homicide detectives and was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon charges. (KOIN)

  • Chris Baron Music will be playing at Paul's Garage in NE Portland as part of Paul Prato's Garage Concert Series. Opening band is Pleoshki. From what I'm looking at, this is actually a garage, rather than a venue, so you may wish to bring chairs and definitely wear a mask. 5:00 PM.
  • The Last Words Concert Series will be held at Lone Fir Cemetery in SE Portland this evening. In the early 19th century communities used to gather for picnics in their local cemeteries, and there are many cultural practices where communities honor their ancestors by sharing food and memories together where loved ones are buried. Bring a picnic to the show and embrace living and dying through community and song. Tickets are free, though there is a suggested donation.6:00 - 8:00 PM.
  • With the great summer weather we're having and the unfortunate pandemic we are masking up for, outdoor shopping seems to be the way to go. That's why Products in the Park is going on tonight at Redd East Event Space in SE Portland. There will lively conversations, educational moments, and lots to see and do outdoors! Food and beverages will be provided, as well as the opportunity to win raffle prizes and giveaways. Register online. 4:30 - 7:30 PM.
  • No More Freeways, the local non-profit fighting the Oregon Department of Transportation and the freeway industrial complex, is turning 4 and it wants to celebrate. The party is at the Lucky Lab NW in NW Portland. The organization is gonna bring some birthday cake, hand out some buttons, and get all of the freeway fighters together in a room again to celebrate accomplishments. 6:00 - 8:00 PM.
  • The city has been working hard to improve Portland streets for cyclists. Now it wants to show off what your tax dollars have paid for. Join the Portland Bureau of Transportation for the East Portland Infrastructure Ride. This is a moderate-paced, no-drop loop ride (no one left behind and will return to the start point). The ride will be 11.8 miles long with stops for comments and a restroom/water stop. Meet at 3:00 pm for sign-in and intro remarks, roll out at 3:15.

  • As I said above, it's National Toilet Paper Day and Moon Joggers wants to commemorate with a virtual race. So lace up those shoes, keep six feet away from everyone else and race for the toilet paper! Since it’s a virtual race you will be able to avoid the crowds but still participate in events with other people around the world! Plus, Moon Joggers will donate at least 20% of each registration to Water Mission, which is an amazing organization that builds safe water, sanitation and hygiene solutions in developing countries and disaster areas. Tickets and registration online.
  • Who wants to adopt a mystery pet? Multnomah County Animal Services has this bird, Kiwi, up for adoption. I think it's a chicken, but what do I know? The website freely admits that the breed, age and sex is unknown. It sure looks cute though! (Multnomah County Animal Services)

I think that's a Thursday and a half. Does that make it Friday? No, now I'm confused. I gotta take a few moments and think this through, but, make no mistake, I'll be here tomorrow waxing poetic about the city I love, Portland.
