Here are the top five stories today in Portland:

  1. Citing environmental concerns and a lack of housing, an increasing number of cities and some West Coast states are reconsidering mandates that all homes, offices and businesses offer a minimum number of parking spots for residents, workers and customers. Leading the effort is Oregon, which is poised in July to enact permanent statewide land use rules that would allow eight metro areas to eliminate minimum parking requirements for many homes and businesses. (OregonLive)
  2. A joint operation between U.S. Marshals and local law enforcement resulted in the arrest of 24 people and the seizure of 21 guns in Multnomah County. Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese said the intention was to nab “offenders who have shown the highest propensity of violence and disregard for human life.” Authorities also seized caches of drugs, totaling three pounds of methamphetamine, 19 grams of heroin and 449 fentanyl pills. (KOIN)
  3. An audit released this week by the Independent Police Review of the Portland Police Bureau's Special Victims Unit found officers need more trauma-informed training when responding to domestic violence calls. Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell stated in a written response to the audit that the bureau agrees with its findings and that more training would improve its response to domestic abuse. (KATU)
  4. A man who was hit and killed by a driver earlier this month has been identified as a 42-year-old Portland resident. Vincent Timothy died on the evening of June 6 after he was struck near the intersection of Southeast 82nd Avenue and Southeast Center Street. The driver involved in the crash, identified as 40-year-old Frederick Deatric Moore, fled from the scene and was later arrested the next day. The medical examiner ruled Timothy’s death a homicide. Investigators believe Moore intentionally hit Timothy. (KPTV)
  5. The Multnomah County board passed a historic 2023 budget Thursday, with one of the major ticket items being spending for homeless services. Multnomah County is allocating $130 million for shelters — $53 million of that is going to buy motel buildings for shelter and permanent housing. The county also plans to spend $106 million on housing: which includes placement, rent assistance and case management services. (KOIN.com)
