The man was already laying on the tracks when he was hit by the train shortly after 6 a.m. Friday, police said, noting it's unclear why.

PORTLAND, OR — Traffic and TriMet MAX trains have returned to normal following a morning shutdown after a MAX conductor reported a dead man on the tracks early Friday.

Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said a man was already laying on the tracks near Southeast 17th Avenue and McLoughlin Boulevard when he was hit by the first MAX train shortly after 6 a.m. Dec. 1.

A second MAX conductor called 911 after reportedly seeing the man sometime later. It's unknown whether the man was dead prior to being hit by the first MAX. Also unknown is why he was laying on the tracks in the first place.
