Portland 5 Things to Do This Weekend

It's not quite planes, trains, and automobiles. There is, though, a car show, a train show, and a cat show.

1. There's a big push for people to get on their bicycles but Oregonians still love their cars. And this weekend - head to the Oregon Convention Center for the annual Portland International Auto Show. Exhibits - including the Motorcycle Pavillion and the Great Outdoors Exhibit which celebrates the Oregon lifestyle - and demonstrations, test drives, and giveaways. Head to www.portlandautoshow.com for more information.

2. The Great Train Show comes back to Portland, spending the weekend at the Portland Expo Center. Scores of exhibitors, demonstrations, all things model train. Check out www.trainshow.com/portland for ticket information.

3. I'm a dog person but I understand people love cats as well. And, if you are one of those people, head on over to the Holiday Inn at the Portland Airport this weekend for the International Cat Show. There's all sorts of competitions. Think Westminster Kennel Club Show. But with cats. And there's a food drive for the Oregon Food Bank. www.tncc.org for more information.

4. The weather's actually not supposed to be that bad but Saturday is the annual Worst Day of the Year at McMenamins Edgefield. A 5K run. Costumes are encouraged - there is free beer for adults in costume. They'll be serving soup, giving out custom penguin finisher medals. And, did I mention costumes? That's important because there will be $5,000 in prizes. www.worstdayrun.com for the details.

5. 5-4-3-2-1! Happy Year of the Rooster! Saturday is the beginning of the Chinese Near but the parade on Sunday is the place to be. Sponsored by the Portland Chinatown History Foundation, the parade - complete with a 100-foot long dragon, starts at 11 a.m. at Northwest Fourth Avenue and Davis Street and ends at the Oregon Historical Society. The foundation promises and afternoon of "afternoon of festivities, light refreshments, and lion and folk dance and music performances." You can check out the parade's Facebook page for more information.
