Portland Man Arrested in Anti-Trump Protest Ordered Held

Prosecutors say Mateen Shaheen wasn't a protesting Trump's election. He was just angry.

A man arrested during the protests that filled the streets of downtown Portland after the election of Donald Trump was ordered held after prosecutors argued he wasn't protesting - he was just angry and destructive.

Prosecutors from the office of the Multnomah County District Attorney contends that 20-year-old Mateen Shaheen wasn't upset about politics when he was arrested after an anti-Trump protest turned into what police labeled "a riot."

Shaheen was captured on video with a baseball bat running away from a car dealership where police said he had smashed more than one dozen cars. He can also be seen smashing a utility box and setting fire to a newspaper box.

While Shaheen's lawyers argued his bail should be reduced to $0 so he can be released, prosecutors said he should continue to be held, citing previous arrests and the fact he was responsible for tens of thousands in damage the night of the riot.

The judge agreed, saying he would be a risk to public safety.
