Portland Moves Toward Deconstruction Over Demolition

The Portland City Council is expected next week to adopt a measure that all require homes built in 1916 or before be dismantled or salvaged as opposed to being demolished.

Last year, of the roughly 300 homes taken down in Portland - about one third were at least 100-years-old.

If the policy is adopted, as expected, it will go into effect October 31.
There could still be hurdles.
Industry experts say that deconstruction requires six more workers than demolition as well as more training.
The city said that they will revisit the start date for the policy if necessary.
