Portland Parks Department Invites People to "Stand With Refugees And Immigrants"
The three-hour event Friday night promises a mix of "Bollywood, African, and Middle Eastern music and dance."

Portland Parks & Recreation is inviting everyone to the East Portland Community Center on Friday evening for a "free multi-cultural gathering to celebrate people new to Portland - and the United States" and to make them feel welcome. The event promises a mix of Bollywood, African, and Middle Eastern music and dance.
The event - which will be held at the center at 740 SE 106th Avenue - is scheduled to last three hours.
"We strive to show compassion, generosity, and support in welcoming refugee and immigrant families to the Rose City," says City Parks Commissioner Amanda Fritz. "Portland Parks and Recreation community centers, programs, and parks are places where all are welcome.

"Though we face much uncertainty, it is our unity that will allow us to persevere. This event gives us an opportunity to come together, demonstrate that unity, and give reassurance of our shared values."
Portland Parks says that the event will also include an opportunity to learn more about PP&R's efforts to provide more inclusive spaces, based on community feedback.

The parks bureau - which also stages events like New Portlanders Cultural Celebration and Family Day and the Portland World Cup Soccer Tournament - says these events "are often many newcomers' first experiences with their City government, and helps people new to Portland access Portland Parks & Recreation offerings and other City services."
