Portland Police Arrest Robbery Suspect Standoff in Southeast Portland

Stolen cars. Stolen cell phone. Special police units being called out. High drama in Southeast Portland.

The good news is that the suspect is in custody.

The bad news is that some residents of Southeast Portland might not have slept as well as usual.

It started just after midnight when officers from Portland's East Precinct responded to a home on the 2600 bloc of Southeast 52nd Avenue.

The resident had called 911 to say a man with a gun had broken in, stole a cell phone and car - a 2004 gray Mazda RX8.

About one half hour later, police were called to another home nearby - on the 2000 block of Southeast 51st Avenue.

Someone said that a man with a gun was stealing a 2014 black Ford Focus from his garage.

Police soon found the Ford.

Then they found the Mazda.

Based on interviews with the victims, officers determined the suspect in both cases was the same person and given that both victims said he was armed with a gun, police called in special units.

The bureau's Special Emergency Reaction Team, the Crisis Negotiation Team and the bureau's Air Support Unit started searching.

Around 4:00 a.m. they found a man hiding in a shed on the 4700 block of Southeast Franklin Street.

At first, he refused to come out but after a half hour, he finally surrendered.
