Near Southeast 27th Avenue and Southeast Bybee Boulevard around 12:30 a.m. June 22, 2016, PPB officers responded to a report of an attempted abduction, police said. When they arrived, officers spoke with a 22-year-old female victim who said she was walking home along Bybee Boulevard toward 27th Avenue when an unknown assailant grabbed her in a bear hug from behind and tried to pull her toward a vehicle in the Eastmoreland Golf Course parking lot.

Near the rear of the vehicle, police said, the assailant attempted to push the victim inside.

After fighting and screaming, police said the victim broke free and ran to a nearby house, where she reportedly asked the residents to call 911.

Despite providing a thorough description of her alleged assailant, officers were unable to immediately develop any leads or suspects, police said.

This week PPB officers were provided information that directed them toward Marcus, who they arrested Thursday.

The investigation remains open, and Det. Anthony Merrill has requested that anyone with information about either Marcus or the June 2016 incident to contact him at 503-823-4033 or anthony.merrill@portlandoregon.gov; or, Det. Vince Cui at 503-823-9786, vince.cui@portlandoregon.gov.

Additionally, the PPB offered a few tips for anyone who finds themselves walking, riding, or jogging alone:

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Consider bringing a cell phone
  • If listening to music, keep one ear free to listen to your surroundings; and
  • Tell someone where you are going, and when you expect to return.

The PPB offers free self-defense classes and personal safety workshops to residents in the Portland area, police said.
