Portland Police Kill Armed Robbery Suspect

Suspect was believed to have robbed the Portland Value Inn earlier.

Portland Police shot and killed an armed robbery suspect Thursday morning in Northeast Portland. It happened on the 8300 block of Northeast Hancock.

Officers had responded to the Portland Value Inn at Northeast 83rd and Halsey around 7:30. A man reported that he had been sleeping in his car when an armed man woke him and robbed him.

Soon after someone at or near the Banfield Pet Hospital on Northeast 82nd Avenue called police to say that a man was prowling cars. They offered a description similar to the one offered by the man who had been robbed by the Value Inn.

Around 9:20, officers searching for the suspect located a home on Hancock that had been broken into. Officers from the Canine Unit searched the home but found no one inside.

Officers outside then found him. During the encounter, an officer fired at the suspect, striking him, and killing him.

A gun was recovered near the suspect though it's not believed he had fired a shot. No officers were injured.
