Portland Residents Grapple with Financial Independence Amid Growing Headwinds

1 in 5 Americans—and nearly 1 in 4 Portlanders—don't expect to ever achieve financial independence

PORTLAND, June 1, 2026 – As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary of independence, many Americans continue striving for financial independence—and Portland residents are feeling the challenge just as acutely.

Nationally, 42% of adults report they still rely on their parents financially, compared to 36% of Portlanders.

“Compared to the national average, Portlanders are slightly less likely to rely on their parents financially, suggesting a modest edge in financial independence,” said Kara Smith, Wealth Management Advisor at Northwestern Mutual and based in Bend. “However, with more than a third still depending on family support, it’s clear that rising costs and economic uncertainty continue to make financial stability a challenge for many.”

Family Support Remains a Reality for Many

Even as a historic $124 trillion “Great Wealth Transfer” continues, reliance on family support remains common across the country.

Nationally, 20% of Americans say they never expect to become financially independent, while 23% of Portland residents say the same, slightly higher than the national average.

“The fact that more than one in five Portland residents don’t expect to achieve financial independence underscores how daunting the financial landscape can feel,” Smith added.

A Strong Consensus: It’s Getting Harder

Across the U.S., 56% of adults say achieving financial independence is harder today than it was for previous generations.

That sentiment is even more pronounced in Portland, where 67% say it is harder, significantly exceeding the national figure.

Meanwhile, just 14% of Portland residents say it’s easier today, compared to 20% nationally, reinforcing a widespread perception that financial independence is increasingly out of reach.

“Portland residents are clearly feeling the weight of today’s economic environment,” said Smith. “Higher living expenses and financial uncertainty are making it harder for many to feel confident about their future.”

Confidence Exists, But Timelines Stretch

Nationally, among those who are not financially independent, 56% say they are confident they will reach financial independence someday. Meanwhile, 47% of Portlanders reported they feel the same.

The average age Americans expect to achieve financial independence is 37, which is identical in Portland at 37, indicating similar long-term financial trajectories.

“Even though the path may feel long, many Portlanders still believe financial independence is achievable,” Smith said. “Working with a trusted advisor can help turn that belief into a concrete plan.”
