Officials upgraded the operation to a second alarm when heavy fire venting through the roof threatened firefighters who were working up there. An evacuation was ordered and a "roll call" was called to make sure everyone was accounted for.

Firefighters then took defensive positions outside the building and only re-entered when some of the fire had been knocked down.
