Portland Weather: A Cold, White New Year on the Horizon

A trace of snow is on the horizon to be followed by some very cold weather.

Portland may not have had a white Christmas. A white New Year's Day - definitely a possibility. It won't be a lot - maybe an inch - but once it gets cold enough to snow - it's going to stay cold.

The Portland office of the National Weather Service says that rain is expected to start Saturday afternoon before changing to snow on Sunday. At 2,0000 feet and higher - it will be all snow.

"Be prepared for snow covered roads Sunday afternoon across the region," according to the weather service.

There should be two to five inches of snow by Hood River, three to six inches south of Gresham and six to 12 inches along the Cascades.

Once it gets cold, it will stay cold for a few days - at least.

The low on Monday and Tuesday should be around 17 degrees with the highs not making it above freezing.

There could be more snow next Thursday.
