Portland Weather Forecast: The Ice Is Melting But More Rain Is Coming

The ice forced closures and caused crashes throughout the region.

The ice is slowly melting and road conditions are improving. At the same time, rain is still in the forecast. In Hood River and the Gorge, it will be snow and freezing rain.

The ice caused all sorts of problems during the day.

Just look at the traffic cameras around the region and you can see how icy it already is out there. Icy conditions throughout the region have led to yet more school closure and are being blamed for numerous crashes including a 30-car crash on I-5.

The crash on I-5 happened around 2:30 Friday morning by Capitol Highway.

The roads were so bad that a TriMet bus that was trying to get there to provide shelter to the drivers couldn't get there. The drivers - both cars and trucks were involved - eventually made it to a nearby McDonald's.

The conditions have also forced many district to close schools yet again.

Portland - which already had canceled classes to give teachers a day to get stuff done - told teachers and staff to stay home as well.

Gresham-Barlow, Reynolds, Parkrose, Centennial, David Douglas, and Beaverton also closed.

Oregon City is opened one hour late. West Linn-Wilsonville and Lake Oswego opened two hours late.

Meanwhile, the Portland Bureau of Transportation said their first concerted, planned use of salt on the roads was a success.

Starting after midnight, crews salted parts of Mount Scott Boulevard, Terwilliger Boulevard, and an area by Skyline Boulevard and Germantown Road.

In each case, the ice turned slush and the roads turned passable.
