Portlanders Say Shared Financial Values Matter More Than Income in Relationships

According to Northwestern Mutual's 2026 Planning & Progress Study

PORTLAND, July 13, 2026 – Portland couples report lower levels of financial relationship strain than the national average, but they continue to place a high value on financial compatibility and healthy money habits. Twenty-one percent of Portland residents in relationships say financial disagreements cause significant strain, compared with 26% nationally.

These findings come from Northwestern Mutual’s 2026 Planning & Progress Study.

“Money conversations are really conversations about priorities, tradeoffs and what kind of life people want to build together,” said Ashley Hedum, financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. “The couples who tend to navigate financial challenges best are not necessarily the ones with the most resources. They are the ones who create a habit of communicating, revisiting goals and making decisions as a team.”

Financial compatibility is a priority, not an afterthought

Financial compatibility remains a top priority. Seventy-three percent of Portlanders say financial compatibility is more important than emotional compatibility, 72% say it is more important than lifestyle and interests compatibility, 67% say it is more important than intellectual compatibility, 63% say it is more important than physical compatibility and 56% say it is more important than spiritual compatibility.

Portlanders want the money conversation before major commitments

Portlanders also favor having financial conversations early. Forty-seven percent say the right time to discuss finances is after a relationship becomes serious but before marriage or living together.

Red flags are about trust and behavior

For singles, behavior matters more than earnings. Sixty-four percent say a partner’s income does not matter to them. Among those who named an ideal income, the average was approximately $133,600 annually. Meanwhile, 49% say poor money habits are a dealbreaker in a new relationship.

“Trust is built through consistency,” Hedum said. “Being honest about spending, saving and long-term goals creates a stronger foundation than any particular income level. Financial compatibility is less about perfection and more about transparency and follow-through.”

Turning financial compatibility into action

To help couples turn financial compatibility from an abstract ideal into a plan, Northwestern Mutual advisors suggest starting with a few clear conversations and habits:

·Talk about your money stories before you talk numbers. Share how each person grew up around money, what money represents to them and which habits feel reassuring or stressful.

·Put the full picture on the table. Review income, debt, savings, spending patterns, recurring bills and financial responsibilities without judgment so both partners know where they are starting.

·Name shared goals and trade-offs. Agree on short-, mid- and long-term priorities, such as building an emergency fund, paying down debt, saving for a home or planning for retirement.

·Decide how money will be managed day to day. Choose whether to use joint accounts, separate accounts or a mix, then set a budget, spending thresholds and shared responsibilities for bills and tracking progress.

·Schedule regular money check-ins. A monthly or quarterly conversation, and help from a financial advisor when needed, can keep the plan current as careers, families and goals change.
