Happy Tuesday, peoples, and welcome to spring! It's a whole new season, but the same old, beautiful Portland. Let me tell you all about it.

Here are the top five stories in Portland today:

  1. Police were called to a shooting in the Buckman neighborhood of Southeast Portland around 7:15 on Sunday morning and found a man dead on the sidewalk at 8th and Washington. The person who shot him was gone when officers arrived. This is the city’s 21st homicide of 2022. (750 KXL)
  2. Emergency crews were called to a crash in Northeast Portland early Monday morning, at about the same time that power was knocked out for nearly 1,500 customers in the surrounding area. The crash was reported shortly before 5 a.m. near the intersection of Northeast 162nd Avenue and Foster Road, just south of Sandy Boulevard. The reporter at the scene said it appears three vehicles crashed in the area; one that hit a power pole, another that came to a stop upside down near a tree, and a third that is in a ditch. (KATU)
  3. Last March, TriMet handed over control of transit policing to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office. Since then, TriMet has been building and training an unarmed group of employees to reassure riders of their presence and help those in need. The Safety Response Team (SRT) began riding MAX trains last fall. SRT members aren't police and they're unarmed. And while their presence can help de-escalate sometimes tense situations with riders, they're mostly there to assist anyone who needs help. (KGW)
  4. In just our region, the harsh realities of the impacts infrastructure can have on communities are still seen and heard. There’s the failure of the levee that led to the destruction of Vanport, Oregon’s second-largest city, which had a large Black population. There’s the displacement of large swaths of families in Portland’s Albina neighborhood to make way for Interstate 5. The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program staff is hoping not to repeat that history. (The Columbian)
  5. Whatever gas is left in the tank for a potential, late-season playoff push for the Portland Trail Blazers won’t include star Damian Lillard. KOIN 6 News has confirmed a Monday morning report in the Athletic from @ShamsCharania that said the 6-time All-NBA guard would not return this season following abdominal surgery he underwent in January. KOIN 6 News confirmed the report a few hours later. (KOIN)
