Print and Save: Portland Sets Schedule For Sunday Parkways

New route is set for outer Northeast in the Gateway neighborhood.

It may be February but Portland's Bureau of Transportation has an eye toward the summer. The bureau on Tuesday announced the schedule for the city's 10th Annual Sunday Parkways events.

The program is set for five Sundays in which routes through neighborhoods are closed to traffic and people are encouraged to ride and walk and get to know their neighbors.

"Since 2007, Portlanders have been able to explore their neighborhoods by walking, biking and rolling thanks to Sunday Parkways," said Commissioner Dan Saltzman, who oversees PBOT. "In every neighborhood and at every event, we discover a new reason to fall in love with our city all over again.

"What makes it truly wonderful is that Sunday Parkways is open to everyone."

The season kicks of May 21 in Southeast Portland. The official 10th Anniversary Celebration will be the following week in Portland. In August, the route will be in Outer Northeast Portland for the first time. The season will send September 24th with a route that goes through Sellwood and Milwaukie.

PBOT says that each of the five routes will showcase low-traffic streets called neighborhood greenways as well as City parks ideal for bicycling and walking. The new Outer Northeast route in August will introduce participants to an often overlooked neighborhood with majestic parks and quiet, livable streets.

"We really have something to celebrate this year,” said PBOT Director Leah Treat. "Ten years of Sunday Parkways! 10 years of opening our streets and helping Portlanders discover the joys of walking, biking and rolling through their neighborhoods."
